A small group gathered at Mike Brower’s house in the evening of May 31st to discuss upcoming events and other topics.

Attending was Mike Brower, Stan Morse, Andrew Oswald (AKA Ozz), Nick Peterson and Joel Hariton.

There was discussion of how we can perhaps stoke up participation in events by focusing on certain decades for certain events. The general feeling was to encourage Antiochians interested in attending an event to recruit other Antioch friends to join in by suggesting so in the announcements.

Events

Next week, Thursday June 9th, the play “Silver Spoon” will be performed at the Central Square Theater. Antiochians get 1/2 price tickets for only $25 when they use the discount code “Antioch 25″ when buying the tickets. Nick will send out an announcement to the entire e-mail list shortly.

Also in June, the reunion in Yellow Springs will occur from the 16th to the 19th. Mike, Stan and Joel will attend, and Ozz will try to get there. Roy Crystal had previously expressed interest in attending as well.

In July, Barbara Wallraff will pick a Saturday outside of July 4th weekend and we will have an event at the Saugus Iron Works. This will include a tour and a report from the people who attended the Reunion.

In August, Ozz will repeat his Antioch Alumni Summer Pool party. Tentative date is August 20th, in the evening.

In September, we plan to have Dave Sherman back to talk about goats from a vetenary viewpoint.

For October we will investigate a talk from a sustainability expert on food production issues such as how large scale farming affects climate change and vice versa. Joel will see if any Antiochians work for the Union of Concerned Scientists, for a start.

Mike suggested we consider how to recruit students and locate opportunities for co-ops in the area. We decided that this would be something we would ask attendees at events to think about but not take action until training and direction comes from Antioch.

Stan suggested he could give a talk on Eskimo perceptions of social change as part of a larger program.

Brainstorming is needed on how to use the attendance lists from recent events to leverage the information better.

Respectfully submitted,

Joel Hariton ’76

A small group met at Mike Brower’s house including Mike Brower, Jim White, Roy Chrystal, Nick Peterson, Andrew Oswald (Ozz) and Joel Hariton.

Regarding the Mark Roosevelt talk and discussion with Alumni on May 5th, Nick informed us that since Catering will be supplied by the Harvard Faculty Club, and paid for by the College, our only responsibility will be to recruit attendees and make sure they RSVP to http://markrooseveltmay2011.eventbrite.com so we have an accurate count for the caterers.

Joel reviewed a conversation with Mark Roosevelt in North Billerica on March 28th. All attendees agreed that the idea of a specialty in Food issues would be a great niche for the College.

We planned logistics for Roy Chrystal’s presentation at Harvard’s Dudley Hall on May 14th, from 4-6 PM. A copy of his presentation was loaded into Ozz’s computer as a primary copy.

We plan no event in June so that there will not be any conflict with Reunion in Yellow Springs, scheduled for June 16-19, see

http://antiochcollege.org/alumni/reunion/

Barbara Walraff (not present) will pin down the tour of the Saugas Iron Works in July.

The next meeting will be on Wednesday May 25th, at Mike Brower’s House. 6:30 PM for an informal bring your own dinner and 7:00 PM for the meeting start.

Attendees: Nick Peterson, Roy Crystal, Mike Brown, Jan Nicholson, Jim White and Joel Hariton

The local event with Mark Roosevelt originally scheduled for March 27th has been postponed, probably until the first week of May.

Mark Roosevelt is focusing his attention on getting the re-accreditation process started, and getting the degree granting authority with the Ohio Board of Regents approved.

Mike Brower reported on the Alumni Board meeting, the highlight of which was a 2 ½ hour meeting with Mark Roosevelt. Mike and others on the Alumni Board were very impressed with Mark’s engagement and interaction.
Mike reported that there still are not enough Horace Mann Scholars, which will be the first class of 25 students when the College re-opens this Fall. These students will get a 4 year tuition free scholarship, and will only have to pay room and board.

Roy suggested that we ask Kristen in Yellow Springs to hold a webinar on recruiting and admissions so we could help with the recruitment effort.

A discussion of the purpose of our group continued. Thoughts included:

To develop a sense of Antioch Community amongst Boston Alumni, without fundraising

To foster love of Antioch, which will naturally turn into support of the College

To bring a friend who has been disconnected from the Antioch Community to an Antioch oriented event

To continue the Antioch experience

To encourage reunion participation

To help the College meet its needs; today students and money, tomorrow co-op job opportunities

Possible Mission Statement:
To build a Boston area alumni community that fosters love of Antioch, leading to contributions of support, both financial and active participation in its success.

Events planned:

April 17th 2PM Central Square Theater “Breaking the Code” play about Alan Turing – Responsibility: Nick Peterson

First Week of May, TBD date, Mark Roosevelt address on the future of Higher Education – Responsibility: all

May 14th 3-6 PM Dudley Hall (If confirmed) Roy Chrystal and Doctor Friend(s) present slide show on Haiti after the Earthquake and aid efforts – Responsibility: Roy

July, TBD date, Tour of Saugus Iron Works – Responsibility: Barbara

Reunion is planned to start on the evening of June 16th with a dinner, and continue through the 17th, 18th and 19th.

Our next meeting will be at Mike Brower’s house at 7 PM on April 4th, 2011. Those who would like to bring something to eat can arrive at 6:30.

Minutes taken by Joel Hariton

A Meeting of the Antioch Boston Alumni Leadership Team was held at Mike Brower’s House in the evening of Tuesday, February 15, 2011. Attendees were Mike Brower, Jim White, David Parker, Jan Nicholson, Barbara Walraff, Andrew Oswald, Nick Peterson and Joel Hariton.

The meeting started with reflection on the sad news of the passing of Masha Etkin, an Alumni active in our activities and loved by all. We will miss her and her contribution. A memorial for Masha will be scheduled in the Spring.

Nick announced that Antioch College President will be in Boston on March 27th, and we have been asked to arrange a venue. Our favorite location of Dudley Hall at Harvard may not be big enough. Oz suggested that he may be able to get an auditorium style classroom at MIT, and back ups of the Cambridge YMCA and Unitarian Church were discussed. The actual location will be finalized at our next meeting when Oz reports back. Meanwhile, Nick with check with Everett Mendohlson about the availability of Dudley Hall.

Mike reported that Reunion this year appears to be a popular event already as overnight accomodations in Yellow Springs are quickly being booked up. There will be another Alumni Board meeting on March 4th, and Mike will report back to us on developments at our next local meeting.

Mike floated the idea of an effort to raise $50-100 million as an endowment in the Coretta Scott King Center, with obvious knock on positive affect for Antioch College. It would allow the college to have another angle on fundraising from different sources.

The college is still recruiting highly skilled and adventurous candidates for the opening class for this fall term. An anonomous donor has contributed full tuition for the four years for every one of the students that are accepted into the first class. This is particularly valuable because financial aid will be difficult to obtain for Antioch College before it becomes accredited. Nominations for qualified students who are interested are being sought, and applications must be in within the next two to three weeks.

The next meeting will be at Mike Brower’s house on Wednesday, March 9th starting at 7PM. Those who want to come early can arrive at 6PM with something to eat for some socializing.

Respectfully submitted by Joel Hariton
